I don't think it's particularly helpful. Avatars with just a letter don't really mean anything. Me and the OP would have the exact same avatar. If you're just glancing at avatars for identities, you might mix up me and the OP in this thread.
IMO, having no avatar at all may actually provide some incentive for a user to set their own unique avatar if they really want to be a part of a community. Having some sort of "stand-in" avatar as a placeholder could disincentivize some users from bothering to set up their own.
